Aranganuraithaandharangam(Secrets uttered by Lord Ranganathan)

Thiruvarangam has the distinction of being called “BhoolokaVaikuntam” or the Vaikuntam on earth. This is the Head Quarters of all the 108 divyadesams. This is the place where azhwars and eminent acharyas starting from Naathamunigal and Alavandhar to Swami Ramanuja, have lived for the propagation of Vaishnavam. For them, Aranganar (presiding Lord of SriRangam) is the only refuge. Azhagiyamanavalan himself is their only love.

Did Azhwars and acharyas embraced Him with their unflinching devotion, or did Aranganar embrace them? That separate subject for interesting debate at another time.

Now, Swami Ramanuja took the responsibility of being the Chieftain and served selflessly. Around 8,000 sanyasis said to have been there with him at that time. Besides, countless number of householders who worshipped only Sriman Narayana (such people are called paramaikaanthis) were living there. Many distinctive disciples of Swami Ramanuja such as Koorathazhwan, Mudaliaandan, Embar, ArulaalaPerumalEmberumaanaar, KidambiAachan, Milagazhwan and Thirukurugaipiraanpillan, who were like the fort of Sri Vaishnavism, of Sri Rangam.

SriRanganaathar and SriRanganaayaki are enjoying Nithyothsavam, Pakshothsavam, maasothsavam and other utsavams (festivals) everyday.

Azhwar sang, “Poliga, Poliga, Poliga” then, which today is shining as the wealth of Sri Rangam.

Countless people have benefitted from Ethirajar (Ramanuja)’s words of wisdom for their welfare. Earlier, we saw how Lord Nambi, after having a doubt “what is the reason for Ramanuja’s oratory power”, became Ramanuja’sdisciple to experience his teachings. Lo! The same continues in Thiruvarangam too.

Thiruvarangaamudhanar once said, “PonarangamEnnil, mayalperugum Ramanuja.” (meaning: when I say shining Sri Rangam, Ramajuja gets into a trance) Ramanuja was mad (crazy) mad with love for Ranganathan.  Lord Ranganathan published his upadesam (preaching) to the world only through Ramanuja.

Specifically, Ranganathan was determined that saranagathi principle should prosper in the world and all should attain Sri Vaikuntam. He decided to preach, through Ramanjuja, the meaning of Bhagavad Gita, (particularly the greatness of Charama Slokam), which, He, as brother of Rama (younger brother of Balarama) gave out.

Archavatharam is the best of all avatharams (incarnations). “Whichever image you like, is My image” is what it is. Whatever way we wish, we can enjoy Him, by dressing Him, conduct celebrations etc

Once, it was the holy day of Panguniuthiram. This is an important day for Sri Vaishnava temples. That is the day of Thiruavatharam (Appearance day) of Piratti (consort of Lord). In general, we celebrate it as Jayanthi day, (the birthdays) of Perumalthose days when He incarnatedas Rama, Krishna or Nrsimha. But, do we know the birthdays of Sita or Rukmini? Do we celebrate Their birthdays?

Perumal has spent time in the womb of different mothers during His avatharas. Pirattis Ayonija – she has always emerged directly without going through the process of birth.    She appears on Her own. One time, Mahalakshmi disappeared from the face of all the three worlds due to a curse by Sage Durvasa. Later, when Devas and Asuras came together to churn the paarkadal (milky ocean) to get nectar, there emerged from it, like a lady-nectar, Mahalakshmi. On that very day, Her marriage happened on the shores of paarkadal.

Her advent and marriage to the BeautifulBride-groom, Perumal, took place on the uthiram star in the tamil month of Panguni. In commemoration of this event, a kalyanautsavam (divine marriage) is performed for Perumal and Piratti on that day every year, in all Sri Vaishnava temples. Called as “Serthiutsavam”, Perumal and Piratti are seated together and devotees happily pray them on this day.

Though this event happens in all temples, there is Sri Ramanujato add extra touch of specialty to Sri Rangam. This is also why Lord Ranganathar doesn’t let Ramanuja go away from Him, and even if he goes, He makes him come back soon.

Once it was panguniuthiram day, this day, whenLord Ranganathar comes to the shrine of Ranganayaki, then together They Bless the devotees, at RanganayakiMandpam there is a very large congregation of bustling devotees. Perumal and Piratti were overwhelmed by the joy, just like how parents would be very happy to be with all their children at one place.

Ramanuja, along with this retinue of devotees and disciples, came there to take the Blessings of Perumal and Thaayar. TheDivyadampathi (Perumal and Piratti) welcomed him joyously. Suddenly, the crowd became silent. That was the respect the people had for Swami Ramanuja. Everyone’s attention was focused only on Ramanuja. The Divya Dampathi were enjoying the pointed attention that Ramanuja was getting from the crowd which forgot to have darshan of Them.

Slowly Ramanuja climbed the steps of the mandapam and prayed Perumal and Thayar. The Lord is the beautiful Groom. It is impossible for normal people to behold His beauty all at once. But, Ramanuja was able to do so because he is none other than the incarnation of Adiseshan. He prayed the Lord of Devas, without batting an eye. Ramanuja’s heart brimmed with devotion. Both Lord’s beauty and Ramanuja’s devotion were overflowing there.

The crowd watched keenly at the unfolding of events. Ramanuja slowly savoured the beauty of Perumal from His Holy Feet to His Crown. To help us understand this depth of devotion, our elders have metaphorically explained this feeling as that of a “loving wife enjoying the love and affection of her beloved husband.”

With thronging crowds on one side and Lord Ranganathar on the other. Swami Ramanuja stood in between as the one and only leader. Lord Ranganathar wore a mesmerizing smile. He is always so, but today, there was also a slight ‘indication’ in His smile. Mother Ranganyakai also slightly nodded Her head, assenting to His thoughts.

Who has the skill to know what is in His mind? Only His devotees know His mind. Today, Ramanuja clearly understood the secret thoughts of the Lord. It seemed that the Lord Ranga had secretly told something to Ramanuja. One who makes the most of the given opportunity is a champion.

This is the same Ranganathar who preached at Kurukshethra war, the great concept of ‘Gita’ to Arjuna, who was disillusioned by sorrow. Arangam means stage. On that day, there was no one to listen to His preaching or appreciate the same. Only Arjuna was there. After listening to all that the Lord said, Arjunan relented and went for war. But should not everyone in the world understand the inner meaning of this exalted Bhagavad Gita? Same Arangan (Krishna) today saw the congregation in Arangam. He entered into Ramajua and made him speak. The booming voice in which Ramanuja spoke those words, resonate even now in the compound walls of Sri Rangam.

Andharam Eriya Andharangam(Secrets that got up the stage)

Swarms of Sri Vaishnava people who were shouting “Ranga! Ranga!” until now, started celebrating Ramanuja. Lord Ranganathar and Piratti were also proudly enjoying these scenes. Amidst these scenes, Ranganathar secretly decided to accomplish through Ramanuja, what he could not do in the battlefields of Kurukshetra.

Though everyone was gathered in the Kurukshetra battlefield, no one could listen to Him. Yet He preached Bhagavd Gita to Arjunan. Today, everyone is ready and willing to listen to Swami Ramanuja. Will He let go of such an opportunity! So, He gave His secret order (wish) to Ramanuja.

Rangan is paranoid. He longs for His devotees to reach Him through some means. He was also skeptical about teaching the difficult path of Bhati yogam to people, as He feared that people would get scared and would never come to Him. He wanted to be accessible to all His devotees. So, He and Piratti decided to give everyone an easy option that they would be able to practice.

First of all, let us understand Upayam (the means), so we can understand the greatness of Lord Ranganathan with the blessings of Swami Ramanuja.

There are only two ways to reach Paramapadham (attain moksham). There is no other means to moksham. In addition, Lord Vishnu is the only one who can grant moksham and no one else has that privilege. This is why both Azhwars and vedas pronounce that “He is the everlasting refuge.”

Out of these two paths – one is Bhati yogam and the other is prapatti yogam. It means, a person who is a male and is born in a lineage that is eligible to learn veda, must learn it well. There are six branches in vedas and he should also know that. In addition, he should follow the rituals (upasana) as said in the vedas.

This upasana is not like the Nrsimha upasana, Devi upasana or Hanumath upasana that’s prevailing in modern days. This is called ‘vidya’ and one has to follow it all through his life. Also, he will have rebirths and during all those births, he should follow each of these rules strictly. If we keep elaborating on this, the essence of the story will be lost. Overall, this is something that we cannot follow.

This brought up the question – how can a common man get moksham? Does he not have any option to reach Him? The All-Compassionate Lord gave the answer to this question through Ramanuja.

“I am common to everyone. I want all of you.” – says Krishna in Bhagavad Gita.  Will a person who said this ever think that only a chosen few should reach Him? Today, he says a meaning, which is the same one that he uttered in Bhagavad Gita that day. Then, He said, “Hey Arjuna! Only after many births does a person have a birth in which he thinks that Narayanan is everything and reaches Me. But, it is very difficult to get a person like that”, he said.

From this, we can understand that He wishes, “More people should come to me. I’m waiting to give them moksham and a blissful life after that.” Now, we can also know the means for this.

The bhakti yogam that we saw earlier is difficult to practice. We don’t know when it will yield results. Also, we are incapable of following it. At the same time, we are interested in getting moksham. This is why, it is best if there is an easier path to reach Him. Such a means is “saranagathi.”

Saying, “O Lord, please take me and all the living and non-living things associated with me for your service” and submitting everything at His lotus feet is called saranagathi. Anyone can do this. We can do this at any time. It can be done anywhere. There are no rules related to it, except one called “Maha Vishwasam,” which is unflinching faith in Sriman Narayana. We should just understand and resolve to ourselves that He is everything, He will take care of us and we have no other goals in this life except to reach Him.

This saranagathi mantram is called “dwaya mantram.” The meaning of this mantram is, “I am taking refuge in the lotus feet of the Lord Who is always with Piratti. I am doing service to Perumal and Piratti.” In Bhagavad Gita’s charama slokam, He says, “Take refuge in Me! I will save you from all sins.” Today, the world understood the meaning of His word – “Don’t fear:”

On this divine day of Panguni uthiram, under the orders of Lord Ranaganthan, Swami Ramanuja did saranagathi. The world follows Ramanuja, and true to this, Ramanuja did saranagathi not just for himself, but also for all others associated with him.

The words that Ramanuja uttered during that time is compiled as “Gadya Trayam.” It comprises of “Saranagathi Gadyam” that teaches us to take refuge in Rangannathar’s lotus feet, “Vaikunta Gadyam” that describes the Lord at Sri Vaikuntam and “Sriranga Gadyam” that describes the beauty of Sri Rangam (Bhooloka Vaikuntam).

In this book, Swami Ramanuja prays to Ranganthar and says, “O Lord! I want my mind to meditate only on Your lotus feet without falling to any distractions. You have to protect me from all the sins I have committed so far. O compassionate One! Virtuous One! I take refuge only in You.” This way, Ramanuja did saranagathi to Lord Ranganathar in the presence of Ranganaayaki.

“As long as I am here, I want to serve you tirelessly,” prayed Swami Ramanuja. Imemdiately, Lord Ranganathar said, “So be it. All your wishes will be fulfilled. Keep chanting the dwaya mantram as long as you live here. You will continue to live comfortably in this Sri Rangam.” The entire world watched this event with awe.

This easy means is for everyone. Azhwar says, “When followers do this, unwanted thoughts will leave them.”

Friends! Why fear! Let us all reach the golden feet of Swami Ramanuja. The event that happened in Sri Rangam is a fantastic event for the entire world.

Once there lived a pious person called Ishvaramuni in a place called Veeranarayanapuram (near present KattumannarKoil).  He belonged to the Sottai clan and was born in Sadamarshana gothram. In Kaliyugam year 3985 and the Tamil year of Sobakruth Aani Anuradha Star, Ishvaramuni was blessed with a boy.  He was named Nathar.

Ishvaramuni and his wife performed all the rituals like Jaadhakarmam and upanayanam at the right ages and Nathar began to learn Vedas and other scriptures through his formative years. He mastered the different scriptures quickly because of his devout nature and he soon became popular for his knowledge.

SriNathar married a lady called Aravindhapaavai (daughter of Vangeepurathaachi) and they continued to live in Veeranarayanapuram.  SriNathar continued his kainkaryam to the presiding deity of this place, Mannar, and at the same time began to practice in Yogic shastram. Soon, they were blessed with a baby boy and he was named Ishvaramuni.  SriNathar and his wife performed the different rituals for their son at the right age and Nathar also imparted his yoga knowledge to his son.  They all lived happily in Veeranarayanapuram.

After a few years, Nathar wished to go on a pilgrimage with his family to the divyadesams in North India.  He prayed to SriMannar and went to different places like Mathura, Salagramam and Ayodhya and prayed to the presiding deity of all these places. He also had a dip in holy rivers like Ganga, Yamuna and Sarayu and from there, went to Govardhan. SriNathar was so happy seeing Yamunai Thuraivar there and mesmerized by His beauty, the entire family began to live there.

Many years later, SriNathar had a dream one night. In his dream, SriMannar asked him to come back to Veeranarayanapuram at the earliest.  After taking the permission of Yamunai Thuraivar,  SriNathar and his family began the journey back. On the way, they visited many holy places such as Kasi, Puri, Simhadri, Ahobilam, Tirupathi, Kadikasalam, Kanchipuram, Thiruvaheendrapuram,  Thirukovilur and Srirangam. Finally they reached Veeranarayanapuram  and SriNathar rushed to see his beloved Mannar. Perumal too was eagerly waiting for Nathar and He showered his happiness and blessings as if a mother was welcoming a son who had gone abroad.  Nathar continued his kainkaryam to Mannar and lived happily.

Once, a few SriVaishnavas had come from a place called Thirunagari and they sang a few hymns on Aravamudha Perumal.  Their hymans portrayed the divine qualities of Perumal and it was a divine experience to hear them sing.  They sang only 10 hymns, but at the end of the 10th one, they sang that this is the 10 of 1000 hymns written by Kurugoor Sadagopan.  Nathar was completely involved and could feel a divine connect with Him through these songs, so he wanted to know more about the remaining 990 hymns.  Nathar gave them the prasadam of Mannar and  requested the group to teach him all the 1000 songs called Thiruvaaimozhi.

But the SriVaishnava group said that they know only these 10 songs.  They further explained that though Thirunagari was their birth place, they have been traveling to different divya desams for many years.  Once when they went to a place called Thirukudanthai, they prayed to Aravamudhan Perumal there.  While praying, they heard another group singing these songs about Aravamudha Perumal and this is how they learned it.

The group soon left, but Nathar’s yearning to learn all the 1000 songs kept increasing by the day.  One day, Nathar decided to go to Thirukudanthai and pray to Aravamudha Perumal there.  After singing these 10 hymns in front of Him, Nathar felt happy and he began asking the elders there to teach him all the 1000 songs.  But they didn’t know either.

Not satisfied, Nathar went to Azhwarthirunagari.  After praying to perumal there, he approached the elders to teach him Thiruvaaimozhi.  They also said that they have only heard of it, but don’t know the songs.  But they said they know a hymn called “Kanninum Siruthaambu” which praises about Nammazhwar.  They further said that they have learned it in the Sampradaic way and they have heard that when anyone recites it 12,000 times, Nammazhwar will appear before that person.

Immediately Nathar learned these hymns and recited it 12,000 sites near the Tamarind tree where Nammazhwar sat for many years.  Perumal and Thayar asked Nammazhwar to appear before Nathar and teach him the complete divyaprabandham.  As per their orders, Nammazhwar appeared with Madurakavi Azhwar and taught all the prabandhams to Nathar.  In addition, they also taught him divine stotras such as Thirumandiram,  Vyasa soothram and other secret granthams with their respective meanings.  After learning all this, Nathar prostrated Azhwar and Perumal many times and returned home beaming with happiness and contentment.  On the way, he spread the word about these Prabandhams and in one such place, a group of elders told him a story related to it.

Thirumangai Azhwar with the blessings of Periya Perumal brought Nammazhwar idol to Thiruvarangam and starting from Sukla Paksha Ekadasi for 10 days Thiruvaimozhi was recited along with Vedas, named this as Thiruadhyayana Utsavam. This was followed for years. As years passed bringing Azhwar idol was stopped and DivyaPrabandham was lost. This was the story communicated by the group of elders to Nathar.

Hearing this, Nathar felt that Perumal had completed one task through him and he hoped that he will get the opportunity to complete the next one too. He went to the temple and with the permission of the temple authorities, he brought the idol of Nammazhwar from Thirunagari to Srirangam.

By doing so, he revived the lost practice that was once followed and reinstated the utsavam called Thiruadhyayana Utsavam. During this utsavam, Nathar sang the first 2000 hymns from divya prabandham for 10 days starting from Sukla Pradhamai and the 1000 hymns of thiruvaaymozhi for 10 days starting from Ekadasi. He sang the remaining 1000 hymns on the next day, thereby making the 21-day Thiruadhyayana utsavam a grand success.

Later, he went to Thirukudanthai, prayed to Aravamudham and consecrated an idol of Nammazhwar there. He also started the practice of conducting Thiruadhyayana utsavam in Thirukudandhai.  Since Nathar took so much effort in establishing the principles of Vishishtadvaitham, he came to be called Vishishtadvaitha Siddhantha Pravarthakar Sri Aravamudhazhvan and even Aravamudhazhvan was happy to see this glory being bestowed on Nathar.

Nathar continued to live in Veeranarayanapuram under the command of SriMannar. At that time, he had many disciples such as Keezhaiagathazhvan and Melaiagathazhvan to whom he taught divya prabandham. After they completed this learning, he sent them to varied places such as Srirangam to spread these hymns.

Just like how Vyasa played an important role in dividing Vedas into four parts, Nathar also played an important role in creating a tune (Devagaanam) for each of these hymns.

Once, there were two ladies who went to the Chola kingdom. Out of the two, one of them sang divya prabandham in devagaanam while the other sang it in manushagaanam.  The king, out of his inability to understand devagaanam, honored the lady who recited the hymns in manushagaanam.  This offended the lady and she went to Nathar for justice.

Nathar is never the kind of person who likes to visit kings and courts.  But since this involved divya prabandham, he was requested by many people to intervene.  Giving into the request of so many people, he went to the king.  To prove that devagaanam is better, he kept a pair of jalra (cymbals) on a pillar and clapped it 74 times while singing the prabandham.  As he kept clapping, the pillar began to melt and the jalra was caught into the melting liquid.  When he stopped, the melted liquid solidified and the jalra was caught in it.  Then, Nathar asked the lady to sing in manushagaanam and bring the jalra out.  But she couldn’t do it. Next, he asked the other lady to sing in devagaanam and hearing this, the jalra loosened and they were able to take it out of the pillar.  By doing so, Nathar proved that devagaanam is indeed superior and the king honored both the lady who sang in devagaanam as well as Nathar for his timely intervention in helping the king understand the true importance of this gaanam.

As Nathar had no attachment to worldly pleasures, he didn’t accept any of the gifts given by the king and he continued to live a life of simplicity and devotion.

SrimanNathamunigal composed  two important grantas Nyayathatvam and Yogarahasyam

Secret Revealed by Ranganathan – Part -1

The pagal paththu (10 days of chanting of 4000 Divya Prabhandha during day time) began in Srirangam with great pomp and festivity, and this day is celebrated as “Thirunedunthaandakam day.” People from all parts of the world had gathered here in large numbers to witness this beautiful event. The entire area including the mandapams, outer gopurams and other surrounding places are decorated grandly with lamps and flowers.

Nammazhwar, Kaliyan, other azhwars and Bhagavad Ramanujar were also eagerly waiting for the procession of Ranganthar. All around them was great gaiety and high enthusiasm.

As soon as the doors of the sanctum sanctorum opened, Ranganathar strode out majestically, walking like an elephant and thereafter like a lion.  Perumal’s procession shone like a gathering of radiant light amidst the flooding devotees.. Everyone there wondered if the Lord’s stride was beautiful or  the stride got beautiful because of its association with Perumal. Such was His splendour that day.

For all those gathered there that day, He is the sole refuge. But for Him, His padhukai are the beautiful stride. Yes, it is padukas that give beauty to the majestic stride of our Perumal right? This is why Swami Vedanta Desikan says that the padhukas give Him gathi (beautiful stride) and the same Padhukas give us gathi (Refuge).

Seeing Him, Azhwars and Ramanujar immersed themselves in this mesmerizing beauty, cried in happiness and chanted “Ranga, ranga.” After all, they are the flowers that glow with dew and fragrance. And Ramanujar is one who will get into trance when he hears about the golden Sri Rangam.

Like this, everyone had their own experience and excitement as they stood in front of Him and prayed. Just like how a  majestic Lion emerges out of its cave in the hills, Lord Rangan majestically emerged from the sanctum sanctorum.

Devotees swirled around Him and rejoiced because all their sins will vanish when His glance falls on them.

Starting from Nammazhwar, Kaliyan, Ramanujar and followed by all other azhwars, everyone lined up. Rangan saw all of them with His dark, glittering and wide open eyes. His charming smile mesmerized everyone. Though He saw everyone with wide eyes, He still searched for something. His eyes darted among azhwars, the gathering of scholars and kainkaryaparas (those who served Him). His eyes moved in search of something just like how a black bee hovers around a fully-blossomed bright lotus.

After searching everywhere, His eyes finally got tired and disappointed, and it closed slowly. Being the object of the Vedas, His face also looked dejected and it resembled a fully bloomed lotus that would close its petals during sunset.

When the entire world was so excited, the Creator was disappointed, and this alarmed Nammazhwar. All azhwars looked at one another and seeing the reaction of Nammazhwar, Kaliyan ordered Ramanujar.

Getting the signal, Ramanujar went near Ranga and spoke, “Hey Ranga! Your face looks dejected. Why?”

Arangan, who spoke to Ramanujar during the recitation of Gadya trayam, spoke again. He broke his silence and started expressing His anguish and that’s how His secret wish came to light.

Secret Revealed by Ranganathan

Part – 2

All the twelve azhwars are taken on a procession during the pagalpathu utsavam. Azhwars, who are none other than divyasuris, have sung hymns in pure Tamil and Rangan always waits eagerly to hear them again. Devotees in great numbers had gathered in the foyer of the temple.  The Adyayana Utsavam is the magnum opus of all celebrations at Sri Rangam.

But today, seeing His disappointed face, all His followers world over  who are always focused on Lord Ranganatha, got confused.. So everyone wondered, ” why was He sad? What is the cause for His yearning?” The glance that eliminates the sins of devotees is sad today, and everyone wanted to know why.

As a collective thought of all devotees, Ramanujar asked Him again, “What is it Ranga? What is bothering You? We are alarmed by the worry on Your face, which is usually an embodiment of compassion. That charming Lotus like face that we’ve always known looks different today.”

Such continuous questions from Ramanujar didn’t seem to have any impact on Rangan.

Though Rangan plays and teases ardent devotees like Ramanujar, the situation today had no element of fun to it at all. Rangan’s eyes only gave a blank stare as if there was going to be an untoward event.

Relentlessly, Ramanujar called out, “O Ranga, the One surrounded by Kaveri.”

To this calling, Ranga responded as if He got back from a  deep thought.

“What did you ask Ramanuja?”

“You understand everything. Also, You’re the One who knows what’s inside everyone’s mind.”

He is the One who controls the entire universe and the One who knows everything so easily. Today, He seemed to be lost in His senses here. How strange!

Hearing this question, Rangan let out a deep sigh. Azhwars and Acharyas have sung about His breath, and how it is filled with the smell of camphor, has the feel of Vedas and the smell of butter. But today, that breath felt quite hot.

Scared that bad eyes have fallen on Him, Periyazhwar came forward and sang “Pallandu” to remove them. Usually Rangan gets excited when His father-in-law sings Pallandu, but today that didn’t move Him either.

Rangan let out a long sigh again, and this further exacerbated His already dwindled Lotus face.

Then, Perumal gently called out, “Ramanuja.”

The thundering voice that gave sermons witnessed by the world on the sea shore and chariot base was hardly heard today.

Once Ramanujar had requested Perumal to give out His orders in a thundering and melodious voice, but today, that voice simply wafted in the air like the smell of camphor.

Everyone panicked with the thought that their Kannan was upset with something.

After calling out for Ramanujar, Perumal closed His Abhaya Hastham (Hands) and gestured through His hands to ask, “Where are they?”

Those hands that tell us not to be afraid of anything and those hands that grant us liberation from this endless cycle of birth and death, looked different with the thumb and little finger closed. Only three fingers were seen on the Abhaya Hastham.

The three fingers that were once closed in the  final moments of the Thirumeni (body) of Alavandhar, were open today in the Hands of Rangan.

Is it gunatrayam? Or thathvatrayam? Rahasyatrayam or divyatrayam?

Ramanujar started wondering again.

Secret Revealed by Ranganathan

Part – 3

Ranganathan is the One who enhances all good things. In the Vibhava form, that is in the form of Matsya, Kurma and other avatarams, He enacted many strange Leelais. They eventually enchanted the life and minds of His devotees and followers.

In His dasavataram (10 incarnations), He has used all the navarasams (nine emotional expressions) to enact some wonderful Leelais for this world. Azhwars and Acharyas have lost themselves in these Leelais and have even taken the imaginary forms of a spouse, friend and mother to cherish and enjoy these dramas.

He, while being the presiding deity, has also done many fascinating actions. In panguni uthiram, for example, He blessed Ramanujar. He also gave the “Vedanthacharyan” title to Venkatanathan . Above all this, He further glorified  Nammazhwar’s sacred Tamil Veda  songs, to accede to the request of Kaliyan. In fact, the Adyayana utsavam is a celebration of this, isn’t it ?

Today, people gathered there were confounded seeing the strange actions of Rangan. Everyone wondered the significance of showing the three fingers.

On one side, it looked like the symbol of Acharyas when they give important messages. All were wondering what is  the significance of the un-folded three fingers.. While it appeared like the upadesa-mudra of Acharyas, from another angle, they were not getting the meaning of the remaining fingers folded.

Though He had taken the incarnations of a fish and tortoise, the incarnation as an Acharyan is superior. Despite taking incarnations of a celestial swan, fish, Hayagreevan, Nara and Narayana, it is His teachings  as Gitacharyan that truly are the blessings to this world.

Giving up all weapons and handling the Sasthras (tenets of Vedas)  is the incarnation as an Acharyan. By showing His three fingers, did He further wanted to reiterate that Sastrams are more powerful than weapons?

All Acharyas were incarnated as per His wish only. Is he wishing to don the garbs of an Acharyan in this Archa form? No one could perceive..

Ramanujar asked, “Aranga! What a predicament! You’re always ready to help Your followers, but today you’re putting us through this anxiety and inability to understand.”

Hearing these words from Ramanujar, Rangan spoke with possessed vigour. “Ramanuja!, you’re talking about your anxiety . That is Mine also, right? Has anyone here given a thought to My pangs? All of you have devotion in Me, there is no doubt about it. But have you ever thought of doing a kainkaryam (service) that will be pleasing to me?”

What a flutter ! What a thrust! Usually, all of us get energy only when Emperumaan  enters into our body and mind. But today, who entered the body of Emperumaan? Where did He have so much vigour and energy?

Such an aggression was not witnessed by the world  even when Narasimha tore the body of an evil rakshasa.

“My Lord! Protector of the Universe! What is it that You desire? Aranga please don’t test us anymore”, said Ramanujar.

Arangan decided not to test His devotees any more. He opened His enchanting mouth and started pronouncing..

Secret Revealed by Ranganathan

Part – 4

All were restless and anguished, not able to understand the secret of His Mind. The Lord who spoke with aggression finally calmed down and saw everyone. There was pin drop silence everywhere. After the outpouring of His Heart, Perumal’s Lips became dry. When devotees wanted to offer Panagam, He stopped them with His gestures.

Everyone waited for Him to talk.

“Shatakopa, what utsavam (festival) is this,” asked Rangan. Azhwar felt happy to hear this thundering voice again.

He replied, “Adiyen, this is Adhyayana utsavam.”

Rangan enquired, “Who started this?”

“It was Kailyan. On the star of Karthigai in the Tamil month of Karthigai, he expressed his desire. The Lord also agreed to this request and gave him  His acceptance, and this is how Adhyayana utsavam started“, responded Nammazhwar.

(Note: You can read more about the request made by Thirumangai Azhwar (Kaliyan) on his birthday (Karthigai star of Karthigai Month) and the birthday prize he got for it and the history of the beginning of Adyayana Utsavam and the significance of Non-Chanting period (Anadyayana Time) in this article published some years backin Sri Nrisimha Priya: https://apnswami.wordpress.com/2018/11/23/thirumangaiazhwar_adyayanautsavam_srirangam/)

“Ok, was it conducted  continuously thereafter ?”

Now, Kaliyan intervened. “Until Adiyen lived, this utsavam was conducted in a grand manner. Then, over a period of time, divya prabandhams were forgotten. After that, Naathamunigal retrieved  divya prabandhams and started this festival again in a grand manner.”

“That means, Nathamunigal had a big role in re-establishing this utsavam, right?”

The stress of  the word “right” was a fore-warning to Azhwars that He is going to ask another question in relation to it.

Rangan asked again, ” My question is correct, right?”

Kaliyan responded, “Of course my Lord, there is no doubt in this. Besides obtaining  divya prabandhams from Azhwar, Naathamunigal was  instrumental in establishing the greatness of Araiyar sevai where these pasurams are sung with the right notes, tunes, postures and expressions.”

Perumal asked again, “Ok, what happened after that?”

“Alavandhar continued it, and after him, Adiyen…..,” dragged Ramanujar.

“Yes, go ahead.. what is the hesitation”, said Perumal.

Ramanujar replied, “Adiyen also continued this utsavam.”

“That is, you took helm of this Tirupathi (holy place) and corrected and established all these in  Srirangam. You created the rules and procedures for these events, right,” asked Rangan.

Namamzhwar said, “My Lord! We are unable to understand why You’re asking questions like this continuously.”

“Shatakopa, now that I’ve started talking, you’ll get the answer within a few minutes. So, respond to my questions first. Ramanuja, did the utsavam continue to happen properly after your time?”, asked Rangan.

Kaliyan said, “No Ranga! There was were obstacles in between.”

“What were they?” – Rangan.

Kaliyan said, “This utsavam was not conducted as per Sastrams and without chanting the Vedas, no one should sing Tamil songs in temples. Sanskrit alone was exalted then. But, many Azhwars like us were not born in families that had the right to chant Vedas. For this reason, our idols should not be kept in temples for worship. Many people put forth such arguments and stopped this utsavam from happening.”

“So, how did it start again?” – Perumal.

“My Lord! You know everything. Our Thoopul Venkatanathan came to Srirangam and won many arguments and debates. By putting forth the right philosophies, he stunned everyone so much that nobody could open their mouth against him. Every pillar in this hall will speak volumes about Venkatanathan’s prowess.

Even against thousands of people, Venkatanathan established the glory of Divya prabandhams and asserted that Azhwars are Nithyasuris (divine people who live with the Lord in SriVaikuntam) who incarnated to lead people in the right path. Even You and Your consort were extremely happy with his submissions  and this is why You bestowed many titles on him such as “Vedanthachariar” and “Sarvatantra svanthanthrar.” He is the Lion among the poets and his  powerful roaring words continue to reverberate  in every pillar even today.”

When Ramanujar explained the greatness of his student so eloquently with watery eyes, everyone felt a very pleasing  vibration around the place.

“Excellent, so this means, the reason for this adhyayana utsavam to continue to happen without any interruption is….”

Even before Rangan could finish the statement, Kaliyan said, “There is no doubt. it is because of our Thooppul  Pillai Venkatanathan.”

“This is enough. Now, I will detail out my doubts and all you enlightened people, please answer it.”

Secret Revealed by Ranganathan

Part -5

Arangan continued, “All of you who are blessed with exalted knowledge and are free of doubts, answer My questions now.”

Hearing these words from Rangan, Azhwars looked at each other. There are two ways to understand the thoughts in His mind. Common people like us can understand it through sastrams while great people will understand directly through the knowledge that He has bestowed on them.  But that day, they all were silent, awaiting for the Lord to explain in detail.

Nammazhwar said, “O the  Consort of Wealth of the Wealth (Sri Devi),  Without mesmerizing us,  Give us Your order.”

“Every time I ask something, you give an example/oath. Further you are beseeching My order here” responded Rangan with a slight shrug.

He continued, “I Myself will explain. Listen now.”

“When Adhyayana utsavam was interrupted by opposing defendants,  who brought Venkatanathan from Kanchi?”

Kaliyan said, “Great people who lived in Srirangam like Sudarsana Suri.”

“Why did they do that?” – Rangan

“Due to old age and they were not in a position to argue further, so they brought Venkatanathan” – Ramanujar.

“Ok, after arguments Adhyayana utsavam began again. We also honoured Venkatanathan. But did his association with Srirangam end with that?” – Rangan

“No Ranga. Based on these arguments, he authored a work called Sathadooshini. Also, to commemorate the award you gave, he wrote another work called Adhikaranasaaravali and further he wrote many more works such as Chillarai Rahasyangal, Dharmidopanishad Saram  Dramidopanishad Tatparya ratnavali, etc during his stay at Srirangam.” – Ramanujar

“Hmm…then?” – Rangan

After invasion of foreigners, he brought back the festivities to Srirangam after a gap of forty years through a king called Gopanaraayan.” – Kaliyan

“Yes, yes, excellent. Tell me more.” – Rangan

“During the interim period, all festivities came to a stop, as Rangan was not there. Desikan restarted all of them again with grandeur and festivities.” – Azhwars

“That is, including Adyayana utsavam too.” – Rangan

“Of course, undoubtedly.” – Azhwar

“That was a nice explanation. But you forgot the all-important Paduka Sahasram!” Saying this, Rangan looked at everyone.

“No my Lord…..” – Kaliyan

“All of you spoke about the festivals that give you joy. But you did not talk about the greatness of Paduka Sahasram that I like and long to hear a lot. Why so?” – Rangan

Complete silence prevailed.

Rangan continued. “He is the one who strongly affirmed the path to Saranagathi through Nyasatilakam and Abhithistavam. Better than all of you Azhwars,Venkatanathan is  the one who sang a 1000 verses on My paduka alone. Or should I say Vedanthaachariyan?”

Silence again.

“Who will know the greatness of Rangan without Desikan’s commentaries  to works such as Gadyatrayam and Stotraratnam. Is there anything comparable to the greatness of Rahasyatrayasaaram?” – Rangan

Rangan turned to other Azhwars and said, “O Azhwars, you know the greatness of the essence of Prabandhasaaram that details out the date and place of birth of each Azhwar. Here is our Paananaathan. The meaning of his pranavam was explained lucidly in MunivaahanaBhogam and Bhagavad Dhyana Sopanam. Who wrote these?”

“Shatakopa, like you moved to Acharya lineage from  the line of Azhwars, Desikan alone deserves to move from the Acharya group to the Azhwar group.” – Rangan.

“O Lord…that is because…..” – Ramanujar.

Even before he could complete, Rangan said, “Ramanuja, please wait. Just because I keep silent in this archai (idol) form, all of you have used it to your advantage. So many new practices are being followed here based on the likes and dislikes of each of you. Is this Srirangam or a street corner?”

“For everything, people argue that it is not in the practice. But do you think all that is happening now is according to the rules laid by Ramanujar? Can someone prove it? After Kaliyan, it was Nathaminugal who gave a tune and time to tamil prabandham, but he is not here. Likewise, Desikan was the one who restarted the festivities, but he is also not here. Why? Will you say that this is also because of Me?” – Rangan

Everyone stood astonished at Rangan’s emotional outpour of His inward feelings, just like a rain cloud pouring out all the rain in it like arrows from a bow .

“Though all of you praise Me and call Me with various names, there can be no Adhyayana utsavam without Desikan. Azhwars and Acharyas, listen to me. Atma distinguishes between the right and wrong. My intent is not to point out the mistakes in any of you, but I wanted to tell you the secret longing in my heart. If you like, we can all get together, set aside our anger and ego and debate about the points put forth by Desikan. Let me promise you that all Acharyas in this sampradayam are equal to me. I see no difference between Acharyas. Can there be a lack of space in this large mandapam? When you bring in more Acharyas here, will the path to moksham get damaged? If I stop this utsavam, it is a disgrace to the sacrifice and efforts of Desikan. Let the world understand that this utsavam happens only because of Nathamunigal and Desikan. When I don’t differentiate between any Acharyas, people use my name to create distinctions between Acharyas. Let this mindset change soon.” Saying this, Rangan heaved out a big sigh.
