Varam Tharum Maram
(Athi Varadar Vaibhavam)
Part 15 – Brihaspathi’s sad state
Due to repeated mistakes and the hard hand of fate, Brihaspthi suffered immensely. Isn’t his life similar to ours too? Many times, we also act rashly without thinking through a situation and this lands us in big trouble. In fact, it follows us to hell too where we get severe punishment for our sins.. But when we realize our mistakes and repent for it, we tend to do some parikaram (remedial acts), so the severity of our sins reduce and we can get away with minor punishments. But there is no parikaram for those who refuse saranagathi to a poor and helpless creature.
“Why did I go to him for help? Had I gone straight to the soldiers, I could have saved the man from incurring such a sin. Alas, why did I not think of it earlier?”, lamented the dog as it gave up its life.
Hearing these last words of the dog, Brihaspathi came back to his senses and realized what happened. he felt miserable for his act. “Why did I do this? What was I thinking? This dog had better sense than me and it was concerned for me. But I failed to protect it and because of it, my sin count is increasing by the day. Can I ever regain my status as Deva guru again? what is the remedy for my sin? To whom can I do saranagathi to relieve me from this sin?”, cried Brihaspathi pouring his heart out.
Brihaspathi staggered and sat down with a hand on his head. His frustration knew no bounds. What will happen to him now?
Life as a human being is an exalted one as you can achieve a lot of things within the shortest possible time, especially the most sought-after state of Moksham. This birth as a human being comes after many births and the virtues collected through them all. Unfortunately, most of us don’t realize it and we fall prey to emotions such as anger, hatred, and jealousy. As a result, the sins from such acts accrue and negate the virtues we have accumulated, thereby pushing us back into samsaram again and again.
The life incidents of Brihaspathi should be an eye-opener for all of us. Before he could get a grasp of the situation, the dog had died. As a parikaram for this sin, he decided to have a holy dip in ganges. After all, this river has the power to remove all our sins!
Due to the few good things he had done over the course of his life, he happened to meet Sage Bharadwaja who felt sad seeing the state of an individual born in his clan. Since this sage had the divine powers to see the past, present, and future, he knew Brihaspathi’s past and wanted to help him.
“Don’t worry my son. There will be a remedy for your sin”, said the sage. Hearing these words, Brihaspathi felt elated for the first time and pressed the sage to show a way to absolve his sins. Immediately, Bharadwajar said, “Don’t wait anymore. Rush to Sathyavratam now. Take a dip in the holy Anantasaras and pray to Varadan and your sins will vanish into thin air.”
“A king called Sathyakethu did penance in Sathyavratam for 12 years and attained moksham. This is the significance of this place. Such a holy place is now blessed by the presence of Varadan and this means, your sins are sure to get absolved here.” Hearing this, Brihaspathi rushed towards Sathyavratam.
Brihaspathi came to Kanchi many years after Brahma consecrated Varadan. If you remember, Varadan emerged from the yagam in Krita ygam and Brihaspathi came here towards the end of Treta yugam. During the early part of Treta yugam, Gajendra worshipped Varadan. By this time, Perumal’s temple was surrounded by dense forests and wild animals roamed here. This presence of wild animals created a sense of fear among people and hardly anyone came here to worship Him. In fact, the area around Hasthagiri was so dense that even sunlight could not penetrate through it. there was a big cave at the foothills of hasthagiri that was closed by large boulders in such a way that those inside could see what was happening outside, but not vice-versa.
In the meantime, a sage called Mahasandhar was involved in deep penance. Indran wanted to stop his penance and played a game, due to which Mahasandhar became an elephant called Gajendran. When this elephant went to the banks of Narmada, it met the great sage called Mrikandu who advised the elephant to go to Hasthagiri to complete its penance.
Like Gajendran, sage Pulasthiyar also came to Hasthagiri to do penance. To avoid any disturbance from wild animals and nature’s vagaries, he started his penance inside a cave where Nrisimhan resided with Harithra Devi.
So, the elephant called Gajendran, Pulasthiyar and Brihaspathi came to Hasthagiri to do penance. They crossed Vegavathi, took a dip in Ananthasaras, and lived through the thick jungles of Kanchi. This is when Brihaspathi got an opportunity to see Devadirajan. but alas, his sins prevented him from making the most of this opportunity!
