Ocean of Bliss

Ananthaarnavam | Ocean of Bliss
What is Bliss? Understanding it through the experiences of the exalted
Those who are eager to enjoy the bliss of Perumal’s divine qualities will have no interest whatsoever in the material pleasures of the world.
In the earlier article titled “Benefits of Self-Quarantine” posted in our blog, we saw how Yogis gain strength by meditating on Perumal. But ordinary people who have limited knowledge neither understand themselves nor the Perumal inside them and spend their time finding fault in others. But when you use this available time to understand Him and to get closer to Him, you’re sure to enjoy a unique feeling of happiness/bliss. Swami Desikan felt this bliss while praying to Devarajan and this is why he exclaimed that he doesn’t even want SriVaikuntam!
Can you spot the irony here? It is always said that the ultimate goal of every Jivatma is to get moksham (salvation) and reach SriVaikuntam. But Swami Desikan seems to reject this notion here. Is this correct? Also, Swami Desikan says that he is able to feel the bliss of mukthas (Jivatmas who have attained moksham) at Thirumalai itself. Isn’t this also against the established path for Jivatmas?
In reality, those who spend their time in His thoughts will be able to relate to and understand the experience that Swami Desikan is talking about. Great people tend to use such expressions to explain their feeling of bliss to the world and we can see such expressions in many places and by many people.
Once, a person asked Parasara Bhattar what he will do after reaching Paramapadam. For that, Bhattar said that if the Para Vasudevan who resides there doesn’t give darshan like Ranganathar, he will jump back to earth! Is this possible? Will you question whether it is possible for someone who went to Srivaikuntam to jump back to earth? No. You would rather enjoy the devotion that Bhattar has on Ranganathar, right?
Those who immerse themselves in the biographies of great people will know countless such experiences. In fact, this bliss can be best enjoyed by those who understand the nuances of the pasuram “AngAravAram adhu kEttu azhal umizhum pUngAraravaNai.”
This means, hearing the sama veda recitation of Nithyasuris in SriVaikuntam, Adiseshan mistakes it to be an attack by the asuras and spits out poison that resembles huge balls of fire. Even today, when you take the darshan of Perumal in the divya desam called ThirumEyam you can see the snake body of Adiseshan and the balls of poisonous fire surrounding it.
(Thrivikrama avataram is celebrated here. This is also explained by great scholars as the step-by-step annihilation of asuras on earth).
“What is this madness? What happened to this Adiseshan? How can Asuras enter SriVaikuntam?”, asked a few people to Bhattar. This is the right way to ask a question because instead of talking and criticizing it among themselves, they approached a revered teacher like Bhattar and asked him to clarify. Bhattar answered, “Even Nithyasuris like Adisheshan experience this bliss because of “AsthAne bhaya Samshayam” ( the boundless love they have for Perumal).”
Another example is the Pallandu pasuram sung by Periyazhwar and for this, our elders show Bhattar’s SriStuti called “SnEhaath asthana raksha vyasanipihi abhayam” as the proof. Why should we shy away from enjoying them? The difference of opinion between Perumal and Garudan and the suspicion that Perumal had on Adiseshan as a result of which Garuda stands in front of Him are some enjoyable stories of Paramapadam that we sing as stotrams even today! One can find the difference of opinions of Garudan and Ananthan in some Kshetra puranas as well.
Perumal’s reaction to Vishwaksenar’s actions is similar to a recently-crowned prince fearing the entry of an elderly minister (in his father’s stature) into his private quarters when he is engaged in youthful activities. Can someone misinterpret this comparison?
Annamacharya, who sang the praise of his guru Adivan Sadagopan, the doorkeeper of Viraja river, is famous among his soul-stirring Kirtanas (songs). Once HH 45th pattam Srimad Azhagiyasingar said in his upanyasam that those who cheated and entered the Archiradhi margam are caught by Adivan Sadagopan and he does saranagathi to those Jivatmas to ensure that they can enter SriVaikuntam. Will anyone even question how this is possible?
We have heard stories about how Virochanan stole the diamond crown and how Perumal and Piraati fought and separated in the enjoyable Venkatachala Mahatmiyam.
We also know how Kaliyan (Thirumangai azhwar) compares the Archai form of Perumal as rabbit meat and SriVaikuntam as crow’s meat to emphasize the fact that Perumal’s Archai form is more beautiful than His form at SriVaikuntam. Will someone call this comparison vulgar?
The world celebrates the beautiful form of Rama when Valmiki describes that the sandalwood paste on Him resembles that of pig’s blood. (Varaha Ruchi RapEna sandaNEna).
“Thavam mEy Aham mEy” is a sloka written by Bhattar in which he imagines that Ranganathar with a wet dress promises by putting the camphor off. Our elders have interpreted this sloka to depict the wisdom of the atma.
When Gadikashatha Ammal elucidated that Piratti who is a Sarvagnyai (One who knows everything) wanted to take the form of a male seeing Perumal’s beautiful Mohini form, everyone listened and enjoyed it.
During these difficult times where big uncertainty looms over our lives (Minnin nilaiyil mannuyir AkkaigaL which means that our lives can come and go like a flash of lightning), let us enjoy this bliss and meditate on His form through such explanations and comparisons given by the Acharyas who are spread far and wide in our Sath sampradayam.
Perumal has given us an opportunity to enjoy this bliss and let us pray that everyone is able to have a similar blissful experience like our acharyas and elders. In these tough times, let us meditate on Him and pray to him to help us achieve the purpose of this birth.
Besides praying to the Perumal who is inside us as Antharyami, can there be anything more meaningful in these testing times?
Let’s help and support those whose livelihood has been affected. Let’s pray to Emperuman to help us peacefully go through these 21 days of national lockdown and remove our Nation’s worry.
