Part 1 – Birth of Brahma
There are four yugams and they are Kritayugam, Tretayugam, Dwaparayugam and Kaliyugam.
The creator of the entire universe, Sriman Narayanan, is reclining on Adiseshan in Paarkadal, deep in thoughts. He had just finished destroying the universe at the end of Kaliyugam because the number of sinners has increased beyond acceptable levels. These sinners were ready to kill other Jeevatmas with impudence and this meant, their sin was getting unbearable for Mother Earth. So, He had to destroy them.
This brings up an interesting question. Isn’t Paramatma the protector of the entire world? If so, why does He kill jeevatmas – the very living beings whom He must protect?
The simple answer – He destroyed them and the universe to prevent a total annihilation! In other words, jeevatmas were going into deeper hells because of the many countless sins they were committing and to prevent their further downfall, a cleanse was necessary. But this does not mean He “kills” every jeevan. In fact, what He does is He takes all of them back into Him and protects them in His stomach when the water deluges and consumes the universe.
In this sense, He is still protecting His precious jeevatmas though it may seem like He is destroying the universe. Also, destruction is the prelude for creation again and all these make destruction a necessary aspect for the cycle to begin all over again.
After the waters of the deluge have drained, it is time for creation again and this is exactly what Sriman Narayanan is thinking about in Paarkadal(i.e. Milky Ocean). Instead of getting involved directly in the process, He is thinking of creating a son who will in turn, take the responsibility of creating the universe.
After much deliberation, a lotus emerged from Perumal’s navel and thus Perumal became Padmanabhan. A child was born from the lotus and He named this child Naanmugan (i.e one with four faces). He is none other than “Brahma Devan”.
Since Brahma emerged from Narayan’s navel, he is officially the first son of Perumal. After seeing Brahma, Perumal gently commanded His son to create the universe and give every Jeevatma a specific role to play in it.
What a huge responsibility this was for Brahma! More than responsibility, it can also be a blessing to undertake such a massive task at the command of His divine father. After all, elders say that it is the father who leads a son in the right path and therefore, one should always follow his father’s words. Brahma set this example to the world by following his Father’s words diligently.
If you’re wondering why Brahma got this immense opportunity, it is because Brahma used his four heads to learn and chant the Vedas constantly. Vedas were taught to Brahma by Sriman Narayana Himself and this makes it the “Father’s advice” to the son. Since Vedas is the mantram taught by his Father and since it also describes his Father, Brahma chanted it continuously.
Such constant chanting of Vedas not only leads us to Him, but also makes the Supreme One happy and He bestows immense blessings on those who chant it. Therefore Brahma got the big blessing to create the world.
Brahma also came to be called Prajapathi, which means, the one with the capability to produce children. He got such an exalted position only because he followed his Father’s words.
It is natural for any parent to feel proud of their children, but when one begets many children who are good at many different things, it tends to get to their head and they become arrogant. This is what happened to Brahma too.
This arrogance of Brahma is an irony because the very reason Perumal wanted to create the universe is to get rid of the arrogance of all Jeevatmas once and for all. He wanted people to live a life of restraint and contentment, so they can focus on their specific duties. In fact, what is the need for arrogance when you’re simply carrying out the task assigned to you? But Brahma did become arrogant and this also led to some complications for him.
