Foreign

The Elders who went to Foreign Lands
Once there lived a great poet called Bhartṛhari. All his three works were very famous and they were Subhashitham (a work on laws and justice), Sringaram (a work on love), and Vairagyam (hatred towards material pleasures). From these works, he had composed about 200 slokas.
Out of these, the book of law opens with a worldly philosophy. He assumes that people ask him questions such as, “Why are you writing this work?Do you think you know more than us?Why this waste of time? Are you so great? Do you think you’re the only person who knows to write?”, and he answers them right at the outset.
A lot of arrogant learned people tend to spend a considerable part of their time being jealous of others. (No one is better than them and when someone gets praised, their rancour towards them increases). But even if you decide to leave them aside and strive to earn a good name from the kings, you’re likely to get mocked as the kings may think that pandits are those who get payment from him and hence, have no right to give advice. Finally, if you decide to teach someone who doesn’t know anything, it gets even worse!
They won’t even realize that they don’t know anything and will spend all their time in vanity and false pride. That’s why we can never reach them.
If that’s the case, why are you constantly writing about such things? Who gets to benefit from these? He answers those questions at the end with a beautiful sloka. |There is merit in your question. I have had the privileges to learn from scholars and while I think about them at my leisure, I get good thoughts and ideas. I imbibed and want to share this sweetness with the world, even if there is no one to listen to them. That’s the reason behind Subhashitham. This work is a flow of my blissful experience and I’m penning it down just for me”, he said.
Undoubtedly, this is not a good trend for scholars to write as the world is scared to see them or accept their work. Still, they persist in the hope that it will benefit someone someday! This is also a way to connect with people around the world, especially at a time when we hear that COVID19 spreads from people who travel around the world.
Many of our family members live in other countries spread across other continents. During these trying times, their state of affairs worries us. Even people who return home from foreign countries have to be in self isolation. The more we think about it, the imminent danger that we are stuck in becomes apparent. But our minds refuse to accept this harsh situation. We are staggering due to our inability to stay positive during these difficult times.
When you think of the solution to this problem, it becomes apparent that we have to follow the ways of our elders in foreign countries.
What’s this new story now? “You have started rambling and are furthering the deterioration of our sastrams by taking this route!” If you’re thinking like this, read on as usual to know the reason.
Our acharyas follow the path laid down by our Sastras and live their lives according to the culture of our land. “Can lust and anger even creep in without your knowledge?” Driven by these thoughts, they always isolated themselves from unwanted things. Moreover, fearing that their way of life will be affected when they travel too much, they lived within their limits.
They were of the firm belief that besides traveling to propagate our way of life, any other travel was not good for their atma. Here we have to think of great people like Navalpakkam swami who lived towards the end of the 20th century.
He lived in the belief that traveling abroad is against our sastrams (In today’s world, it is happy and heartening to see that all those who are living abroad are playing a big role in propagating our Sanatana Dharma). At the same time, we can see that those who are steeped in acharams refuse to travel abroad.
Now, you might wonder why is this article titled “The Elders who went to Foreign Lands“? Read the answer given by Swami Desikan.
Even Vedas celebrate the greatness of our learned people. Our elders dip us in the Ganga river (the compassion of Perumal and Piratti) to purify us. If you’re wondering what is their greatness, they are the ones who are far away from bad and negative qualities such as arrogance, false pride and shaming others through it, not following the path shown by our elders, jealousy, and hatred.
Today, we believe that people living in foreign lands are more cultured than us. In fact, we are mesmerized by the Western culture. We gape at foreigners with a wide open mouth and we are completely captivated by all that they say about life in those lands. Hearing this, we also strive to follow the same culture in the belief that our status will also be elevated when we live like that.
In that case, whom should we follow? Since we want to follow foreigners, we should follow our acharyas because they are the real foreigners.
Yes, they are the ones who stay in foreign lands, away from qualities such as jealousy, anger, hatred, and falsehood. They maintain social distance with these qualities. When we follow their footsteps, we can earn the good status and life that we want.
At a time when the same prayer is ringing in the hearts of people around the world, let us cleanse ourselves by talking about the glories of our elders. Let us understand that following their footsteps is the best path for us.
