Varam Tharum Maram
(Athi Varadar Vaibhavam)
Part 14 – The fool who drove a dog
Misery became an integral part of Brihaspathi’s life. Seeing his poor health, a kind lady offered a place for him and even gave him food everyday. Though Brihaspathi was waiting for his misery to end, it did not happen as quickly as he wanted. This was when the king of that region came along with his son and retinue to the village where Brihaspathi was living.
Brihaspathi was living in a dilapidated hut, in an isolated area, just outside the village. This hut had leaks in its roof and it could not protect him from the brunt of the sun or rains. There was no item inside the house and it was nothing but a dirty and dilapidated hut. No one ever wanted to stop or step inside that place.
Close to his hut, a street dog had recently given birth to a few puppies. The king’s retinue came through that place and the young prince strayed a bit away from the army. Seeing the dog, the prince stopped and stared at it. No one noticed that the prince was missing and the retinue marched on along with the king. This young prince forcefully took a puppy that was drinking milk from its mother and threw it into a well, right in front of the mother.
This enraged the mother dog. Though we can argue that the young prince did it out of ignorance and without understanding the gravity of the situation that by no means lessens the pain of the mother dog. To take revenge for the death of its child, the mother dog chased the prince and bit him at many places.
Seeing the situation, the soldiers gathered their weapons and came to attack the dog. Understanding that its life is in danger, the gathered took the other puppy in its mouth and ran away. But the soldiers came in hot pursuit. The dog could not find any place to hide, so it entered Brihaspathi’s house and hid itself in a corner.
The soldiers searched everywhere but could not find the dog. Since Brihaspathi’s house was not even fit for a dog, they did not bother to check there. Brihaspathi did not know any of this. He came from the back side of his house and seeing a dog, he screamed. (NOTE: One should not raise dogs in the house. If there is a necessity to raise one, you have to ensure that it never enters the house because it is a great sin to have a dog inside your house. This is what our sastras say and it is up to individuals to accept it).
The dog said, “O Brahmin! The royal soldiers are looking for me and want to kill me. please bear for a few minutes. I will leave as soon as they go away. ” Hearing the dog’s feeble voice, Brihaspathi stopped and looked at it. Moreover, the dog did saranagathi to him and asked him to help. Every person who follows the sastras should protect the person who has done saranagthi to them. There are no rules for Saranagathi and for protecting those who do it to you. This is the rule and there are no exceptions to it.
But Brihaspathi did not follow it and he tried to send the dog away. The dog pleaded, “Sir, please! Just a few minutes. Please save me and my child. ” All this fell on deaf ears and he said, “Wretched dog! How dare you spoil the sanctity of my house?” He drove the dog out with a cold heart notwithstanding its pleadings. Hearing the sound, the soldiers spotted the dog. Realizing that there is no more possibility for survival, the dog cried and said that the Brahmin had deserted someone who had come to him for refuge. It said, “I did saranagathi and he refused to protect me and this is going to entail a huge sin for him.” As soon as the dog said this, the soldiers came and killed the dog and its child.
Saranagathi is applicable to everyone. Perumal protects all those who come to Him for refuge, even if they have committed countless sins. Swami Ramanuja and Swami Vedanta Desikan have explained Saranagathi in-depth in many of their works. It is applicable for everyone, regardless of economic status, clan, age and any other factor. Our puranas show that Perumal has saved even the most notorious of sinners like Kakasuran when he did saranagathi. Perumal will protect us too and will take us away from the problems of Samsaram. All that we have to do is approach an Acharyan and through him, do saranagthi to Perumal. This is the goal of our life and we should not waste this golden opportunity. Also, we have to protect all those who come to us for refuge. Since Brihaspathi refused this simple act, his suffering increased.
Brihaspathi lost his mind and gave a wrong decision at first and then, he sent away a dog that came to him for refuge and this eventually led to the killing of the entire dog’s family.
After all this, what is his state?
