Varam Tharum Maram
(Athi Varadar Vaibhavam)
Part 13- The Brihaspathi who lost his position
Brihaspathi, known for his intelligence and wise actions, is the guru of Devas. He holds the second position after Saraswathi, in knowledge and he has used his intelligence to save the Devas from many tricky situations.
Once, he had to face a lot of difficulty and let us see how Varadan helped him out of it.
In Krita yugam, Brahma consecrated the Varadan who emerged from his yagam. “Ka” is Brahma’s name and since he prayed to Perumal here, this place came to be known as Kanchi. In Treta yugam, a rishi called Mahasaandhar roamed this area in the form of elephant and got moksham due to Varadan’s blessing. This story of Brihaspathi spans across both the Treta and Dwapara yugams.
Once, there was a great debate in Devalokam. Since the topic of debate was an important one, all the Devas under Indra, Devarishis and Brahmarishis had gathered there.
This was the topic of debate. There was a grishasthan who has been doing all his everyday rituals like Sandhyavandhanam, Devapujai, Oupasanam, Agnihotram and Vaishvadevam. (NOTE: We have to do these rituals everyday without fail. Due to Kali’s prowess, the number of people following these rituals have greatly reduced. In fact, most of us may not even know the reason for these rituals. If you fall in this category, do reach out to elders and learn these rituals and their significance from them).
This Grihasthan had never visited any Divya Desam and was content praying to the Perumal in his home.
On the other hand, another man never followed any of these rituals. But he used to do the yearly devasam for his ancestors without fail and visited many Divya Desams and prayed to Perumal there. He used to do mantra japam without doing any of the daily rituals. His family life was good without any paucity.
As you would have guessed by now, the debate is to determine which one of the two is right.
This important question is relevant even today. Is it good to be at home and follow all the daily rituals as prescribed by our sastras or is it good to do just the yearly devasam and visit different Divya Desam Perumal? Who amongst these two is better? Since this is a difficult question that can only be answered by someone who has an in-depth knowledge of our sastras and an uncanny ability to distinguish between right and wrong, this topic was debated in Devalokam. so, the responsibility to answer this question fell on the shoulders of Brihaspathi.
Also, there was a bit of apprehension among those present there. How do we know if Brihaspathi is giving us the right answer?, they thought. At that time, they decided to make a vow that whoever gives the wrong answer to this question will lose their divine power.
Let’s stop here for a second and compare it with the current -day situation. Most decisions today are done without regard to justice, fairness and integrity, and with money as the only goal. There is no fear or sins now. But in those days, people were scared to stray away from the path of Dharma. This is definitely something to ponder about.
Moving on to the decision, Brihaspathi was a bit confused despite his knowledge. But he refused to acknowledge it because he was arrogant about the knowledge he possessed. After all, he is the guru of Devas, he thought. With such arrogance, he said that the person who is visiting Divya Desams and praying to Perumal is better than the person who is at home and doing all rituals.
Hearing this decision, there was a moment of silence in the debate hall. The Maharishis, who did not expect this decision, felt saddened. how can the words of our elders be negated like this, they wondered. How come the Deva guru gave such a verdict? Why did he get confused suddenly? They felt this was an unjust decision. As these thoughts pondered in their minds, the Devaguru lost his divine powers.
This is the hand of fate. When the greatest of gurus like Brihaspathi can feel confused, what about normal people like us? This is why we should think before saying anything, especially if it is related to sastras and Dharma. It also goes to show that lack of focus during crucial times can be detrimental to one’s life.
Our sastras clearly say that every man’s highest duty is to do the daily rituals, even if it means that he is confined to his house. If and when he gets a chance, he can visit Divya Desams, but that can never take precedence over daily rituals. But Brihaspathi gave the wrong verdict and this proved bad for him.
(Read this once again. Visiting temples and Divya Desams without doing the prescribed daily rituals does not augur good for an individual. Every person has a mandatory set of rituals according to Varnashrama Dharmam and this must be followed without fail. There is nothing wrong in going to temples, but only after you do the actions prescribed by the sastras. Not doing/following these rituals amounts to violation of your duties.)
This is why Brihaspathi’s decision is wrong and as a result, he lost his divine powers. During the middle part of Treta yugam, he was born as a man on earth to a Brahman called Mantrajit who belonged to the lineage of Bharadwajar. He lost his mother after birth and his father was poor as well. The father found it hard to raise this child because of poverty on one side and the constant diseases that was afflicting the child on the other. Unable to bear this stress, the father died shortly after.
The child became an orphan and roamed around aimlessly. But since he was Brihaspathi in his previous birth, he knew who he was and why he had to go through so much misery. He patiently bided his time on earth and waited to finish this janma, so he can gain his position as Brihaspathi again. For this reason, he remained mute and said nothing to anyone.
He spent most of his time alone and his health suffered greatly because of a lack of food and also due to the many diseases that plagued him. But still played games with him.
